A personal assistant is also called executive secretary or executive assistant. He acts as the company president’s trusted aide and a large portion of his job consists of screening and reviewing all documents coming from the different office departments and the outside clientèle.
In most cases, especially when they have spent many years together, the personal assistant becomes the alter ego of the president. Because of his considerable experience in the job, the personal assistant is able to take on critical functions like making major company decisions, attending meetings, preparing and presenting project profiles or proposals, all in behalf of the company. Easier parts of a personal assistant’s job include making appointments, setting meetings, receiving and making calls, arranging and monitoring schedules, entertaining guests, etc.
If you are aspiring to be a good and responsible personal assistant, you should know your company and its policies by heart. This will enable you to interact well with you peers, bosses and other business associates who play important roles in the company business. You must also show integrity and trustworthiness at all occasions, and must know how to observe confidentiality.
The job of a personal assistant does not require formal schooling or a specific college degree. Sometimes the needed skills and talents are inborn in a person — they just need to be enhanced and improved. Even only high school graduates or college drop-outs can end up being the best personal assistants as long as they show the right aptitude and passion for the position.
Like every other kind of job, being a personal assistant has its own perks. Because you are almost always with your boss in every occasion that he goes to, you get the rare chance of mingling with the elite and the crème of the crop belonging to the high level of society.
In executive meetings or parties where top executives or businessmen attend, you can get lucky enough to get exposed to many lucrative and attractive job opportunities. At other occasions, you even get the chance to travel with them for free, go to a lot of places and learn more about different cultures and peoples, thereby widening your horizon.
Being a personal assistant is not all fun and glamor. It also has its share of disadvantages. But which type of job hasn’t, anyway! It’s really up to you to appreciate this type of job and be successful, or in any other kind of job for that matter. It all depends on your personal choice and preference.
