A Career as a Psychiatric Nurse

A nurse who is primarily involved in caring for and working with patients that are showing signs of abnormal mental conditions is called a psychiatric nurse. They are usually assigned at the psychiatric ward or the mental health department of a medical institution.

Although a psychiatric nurse’s main function is to take care of a mentally disturbed patient, they are sometimes responsible for mapping out treatment designs aimed at improving, if not totally curing, the mental condition of his patient. At other times, he is tasked to extend moral support to the patient’s family by carefully telling them how such treatments will be carried out and the effects they will have on the patient.

Psychiatric nursing, compared to ordinary nursing, involves deeper responsibilities. This is why psychiatric nursing students are required to complete a more sophisticated curriculum. This is to prepare them for the more difficult job ahead. Psychiatric nurses with a master’s degree definitely have an edge over those who don’t. They also have more chances of getting better and higher paying job.

There are two major classifications of the job of a psychiatric nurse: the basic and the advanced. The basic responsibilities are limited to mere interaction with the patients, their families and the community, but the nurse is expected to easily identify the mental condition of the patients as well. In advanced psychiatry, the nurse is personally involved in the treatment by designing the nursing programme himself and applying the same into actual practice.

Other branches of psychiatric nursing are nursing for the children, the teens and the elderly. Each field has a different and special type of treatment package, but all three require the basic ability of assessing the mental condition of the patient.

Does a psychiatric nurse get higher pay than an ordinary nurse, one may ask. As in all other jobs, the amount of pay is determined by the person’s educational attainment, number of trainings attended, acquired skills and actual experiences gained. The hospital’s location and status are also determinant salary factors. It goes without saying that a qualified psychiatric nurse who has worked in a first class hospital for ten years will definitely command a higher pay than a fresh graduate working in a provincial clinic.

In the present era where medical career graduates are very much in demand anywhere and everywhere, a promising career awaits a psychiatric nurse, no matter how inexperienced he may be.
